ABOUT AGASSIZ, BC (DISTRICT OF KENT)

Agassiz provides a wonderful balance of rural land, active agriculture, and straightforward small-town living all within a quick drive to main urban hubs like Chilliwack and Abbotsford.   Agassiz appeals to buyers and longtime residents alike who value space to breathe, an active outdoor lifestyle, strong community roots and amazing mountain views.

Agassiz is the main town in the District of Kent, an area comprised of approximately 6,300 residents (2021 census figure).  The Kent District is an area comprised of approximately 2,350 homes with the majority of them being in Agassiz.  This is a true retirement town with one in four residents being 65 or older, but Agassiz is still a farm town, dairy, berries and corn shape the nearby fields, Agassiz still calls itself the corn capital of BC.  Families, retirees, farm households, people working locally and commuters all share the same streets and together enjoy the incredible view of Mount Cheam.

Mount Cheam rises 2,104 metres (6,903 feet) on the south side of the Fraser River.  It is on the northern end of the Cheam Range in the Canadian Cascades.  The view of Mount Cheam from Agassiz is at it's most dramatic, it is the north face that drops almost 2 kilometres to the valley floor.

Drive Times & Regional Access

Agassiz is centrally positioned for easy commuting across the Valley and quick trips south of the border:

  • Chilliwack, BC: 15 to 20 minutes west over the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge.

  • Harrison Hot Springs: 8 minutes north for lakefront access, dining, and boat launches.

  • Abbotsford Airport (YXX) & City Core: 45 to 55 minutes west down Highway 1.

  • Sumas Border Crossing: 40 to 50 minutes west for direct US access.

Downtown Agassiz & Daily Services

The heart of town runs along Pioneer Avenue, offering a scenic and walkable commercial strip of convenient stores with direct views of Mount Cheam to the east.

  • Pioneer Avenue Shops: Walkable downtown featuring local grocery stores, essential health services, professional offices, banks, and local spots to grab coffee or lunch.

  • Heritage & Culture: Home to the historic 1893 CPR Station Museum and the iconic red caboose right in town.

  • Easy Parking & Walkability: Plenty of free, accessible street and lot parking throughout downtown makes day-to-day errands quick and hassle-free for local residents.

Land, Lifestyle & Community

Agassiz is built around strong agricultural roots and immediate access to the outdoors:

  • Real Estate Variety: From affordable entry-level strata condos downtown to single-family subdivisions, townhouses, and expansive acreages with barn and shop space.

  • Local Produce & Agriculture: Surrounded by active dairy farms, corn fields, artisanal markets, and roadside farmgate stands.

  • Recreation on Your Doorstep: Minutes from salmon and sturgeon fishing on the Fraser and Harrison Rivers, local golf courses, hiking, and winter ski trips up to Sasquatch Mountain Resort.

All of that and one of the best small town Fall Fairs in the country.  Since 1901 the Fall Fair has packed the Fairgrounds at 6800 Pioneer Ave for a weekend of parade, livestock, midway and more.  Attendance to the Fair this year is again expected to be 10,000 plus people.

Update : The Lets’emot Regional Recreation and Aquatic Centre will open in late 2026 — an indoor eight-lane lap pool, lazy river, leisure pool, whirlpool, steam and sauna on Pioneer Avenue, next to the existing rec centre. Lets’emot means “one heart, one mind” in Halq’eméylem: the pool is built for Agassiz, Harrison, Seabird Island and the communities north of the Fraser. It replaces the old classic outdoor Ferny Coombe pool, so lessons, public swims and the Aquanauts no longer have to wait on summer, winter swimming is finally in town.
